White, Bigoted, and Young: The Data of Hate (NYTimes)

I would like to take a moment to point out that the most popular states for white supremacists are not the South, not by a long shot. It’s places in the northwest, followed by this hook across the middle of the country. The South still has an uncomfortable presence here, but most of it is at the same level as Iowa or Nevada (and the Carolinas are on par with New York and California!). (And I do see AK, TN, KY, and WV there, doing their crummy thing.)
This is not to say that the South (and all of the US!) does not have a problem with racism - but it is not where the seat of this grossness stands, at least when it comes to Stormfront. We obviously have massive race issues. But maybe let’s stop acting like all white supremecists are some stereotypical, middle-aged Southern yokel. According to this chart, most are young and from not-the-South.
I don’t know. It’s possible that the Southern states look less prevalent on these forums because they have larger minority populations than in the Mountain West. The relevant population in the denominator isn’t the total population of the state, it’s the white population. You’re not going to find non-white people on white supremacy forums after all.
